And while the King's Runner 10K is an all-ages, all-abilities 10K race that's accessible to everyone of all fitness levels, there are some key details you'll want to know ahead of time to make the most of this beautiful Hawaiian 10K.

What is the King's Runner 10K in Honolulu?

The King's Runner 10K is a relatively new running event organized by the iconic Honolulu Marathon, and it first took place in 2018.

"It’s really exciting to have this distance added to the Hawaii race calendar,” Mariane Uehara — the former co-founder and director of the Honolulu Marathon — told local news channel KHON2 at the race's inauguration. “[From] Thomas Square, which is a unique start right in the heart of Honolulu, we’re going to head down...toward the ocean, do a little lap around Kakaako park, then head over to Ala Moana park, [and] come back. What’s real good about that is you’re able to see your competitors, your friends, and you’re able to give that good energy to each other to keep everyone’s spirits up.”

Key Race Details to Know

The King's Runner 10K is the perfect way to move your body, soak in the Hawaiian sun and ocean breeze, and see Honolulu's historic Hawaiian sites and views up close and personal:

  • Date: The next King's Runner 10K takes place on March 3, 2024.
  • Time: The King's Runner 10K kicks off at 6:45 am right as the scenic Hawaiian sunrise begins to peek over the horizon.
  • Course details: You'll start right near the King Kamehameha III statue in Thomas Square. The course map avoids any hills, and its flat elevation makes it a great way for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy a competitive run in Honolulu. You'll head down South King Street through the heart of downtown before breezing through the Ala Moana coastline and circling back to the start line.
  • Registration: Only 4,000 people are allowed to race in the King's Runner 10K — and it has traditionally sold out completely since its inauguration — so early registration is key. Registration is available online, and registration fees range between $40 and $130 depending on when you register and whether you want additional race entries. Race packets can be picked up on March 1-2, 2024.
  • Parking: Plan for a lot of traffic, even more than typical Waikiki traffic. Parking is available at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center (777 Ward Ave, Honolulu, HI 96814, a convenient 14-minute drive or 20-minute bike ride from the centrally located Waikiki Resort Hotel) for $10. Save time by pre-paying online so you don't have to pay at the gate, with parking opening at 4:30 a.m.

How to Prepare for the King's Runner 10K in Waikiki

Preparing for the King's Runner 10K in Hawaii involves a combination of physical training, mental preparation, and consideration of the unique environmental factors of the location:

  • Start with a realistic assessment of your current fitness level: Gradually increase your weekly mileage and incorporate different types of runs, such as long runs, interval training, and tempo runs. If you're not accustomed to running at sea level, consider arriving in Honolulu a few days early to acclimate.
  • Think about the climate: The temperatures in Honolulu are mild in the spring, but may still be warmer than what you're accustomed to at home. Choose lightweight and breathable clothing to stay comfortable in the heat, and although the course map is flat, you'll still want to invest in good running shoes that provide support and traction.
  • Fuel your body: While you might be on vacation, consider scaling back on those mai tais and focus on a well-balanced diet, including carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats.
  • Know your race day logistics: Plan your transportation to Thomas Square and arrange parking and accommodation if needed.
