Kalapana @ Blue Note Hawaii
Kalapana emerged as one of the most popular bands on the Hawaiian music scene in the 70s, producing a steady stream of hits. Their eponymous 1975 debut album has been hailed as one of the best of the mid-70s Hawaiian renaissance. And with their trademark vocal harmonies, laid-back grooves, and popular originals.
Kalapana got its start in 1973 with thanks to childhood friends DJ Pratt and Malani Bilyeu, who auditioned together at the Rainbow Villa for Cecilio & Kapono. Their first gig was at Chuck’s in Hawaii Kai. Just 3 short years later, Kalapana’s popularity had expanded exponentially, and by June of ’76, they performed for 25,000 people over three nights at the Waikiki Shell.
Later, as they gained popularity, they went on to become the opening act for Earth Wind & Fire, Sly & the Family Stones, Cecilio & Kapono, and others. The band was nominated for several Nani Awards (the predecessor to the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards), with lead singer Mackey Feary winning “Best Male Vocal,” among others.
Other concert highlights include the grand opening of Hard Rock Café Honolulu, tours to the Philippines for over 10,000 people, mainland shows and many successful tours to Japan. Kalapana has recorded 17 albums since their first release in 1975, and practically every album has become an island classic. 25th and 30th Anniversary performances (in 1999 & 2004, respectively) have equally recaptured the magic of yesteryear, drawing capacity crowds.
